Minister hails India support to Malawi

Minister of Foreign Affairs Nancy Tembo has hailed India’s role in advancing education and skills development through the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (Itec) programme.

Speaking in Lilongwe on Tuesday when the India High Commission hosted the 61st anniversary celebrations of the Itec Day, the minister highlighted the role the programme plays in capacity building in Malawi.

Said Tembo: “Itec has strengthened the relationship between India and other countries, including Malawi. Many Malawians have gained knowledge in fields such as health, law, and agriculture. India has skills they do not keep to themselves, but share with others so they too can prosper.”

In his remarks, Indian High Commissioner Amararam Gujar emphasised his country’s commitment to knowledge sharing with other countries.

“India always believes in sharing expertise, knowledge and know-how with our friendly partner countries. Since 1964, almost 200 000 people across the globe have benefited from Itec. In Malawi, many professionals have gained vital skills in sectors such as ICT, cyber-security, urban planning, finance, and rural development,” he said.

National College of Information Technology  lecturer Margaret Chisi, shared how the programme has impacted her career and Malawi’s education sector.

Established in 1964, the Itec programme provides scholarships and training opportunities for students and professionals from other countries, enabling them to study in India.
